Well, I feel like there was kind of a boom of people studying English around 10 years ago in anticipation for the Tokyo Olympics… But then Corona happened! What a bummer. Anyway, speaking of the most dramatic shift — perhaps I have a slight recency bias, but I feel like it started two years ago and is still happening now. AI has completely changed the game when it comes to English education. Probably around the time when I stopped using "DeepL" and other translation tools in favor of LLMs. I think that was around the beginning of 2023 or so. A great teacher? I'm not sure if you can. Language is a tool for human connection, so I don't know if AI tools will ever be able to match that kind of intimate relationship — but man, they can fast-track progress! And that is the kind of thing a great teacher wants for their students. I think there is a cultural factor at play here — it seems more difficult for Japanese students to speak out confidently than in other countries. I love that ELSA focuses on pronunciation and is something you can do alone, because learning languages is all about making mistakes as you communicate, and it seems very stressful for many people here to make mistakes in front of others. I think the personalization features are very effective, and the little games you can play are great because they keep things fun. The area I'd like to see improve is the voice in the AI role play. It really excites me. More tools for everyone! Let's go! I don't see it as the "defining frontier" per se, but it is an important sector. To be honest, I'm not sure what winning there looks like. I guess it would be winning a lot of corporate contracts with big companies. That's a tough question! I've got my finger on the pulse of AI progress more than most, but my predictions of the future change constantly! I guess it's fair to say that at this point, anything is possible. It doesn't really change how I present ELSA to students — I always tell them new features are coming, so the value of what you're getting keeps increasing with time. I think that is already possible, but it's weird. You have to be a very specific kind of person to become fluent in English without any motivation coming from authentic human connection. Haha, a promise? Man, I don't know. I'm just doing what I love to do! I'd like to deliver more positivity to the world in the next decade. As for what English learning will look like? Well, a lot more AI tools to help you. Embrace them! Yoshi and I had collaborated on other projects many years ago, but we hadn't seen each other in a long time. We ran into each other one night and I told him all about podcasts because I was — and still am — a total podcast freak. After that night, we exchanged a few messages and both got excited, because there wasn't much content in Japan at that time. So yeah, it was one serendipitous night. Before that I was a huge fan, but until I talked to Yoshi about it, I never really considered starting one. Yeah… all of the above, lol. We didn't know if anyone would hear it, but we were excited. The original plan was to do it for a year to see if we could build it into something real. It took a lot longer than that, but we got great engagement from our listeners and we were having fun, so we just kept going. Communication! We are humans. We need to communicate! Speaking English opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I've witnessed it many times and never get tired of it — when someone works hard, improves, and then travels abroad confidently and gets more opportunities professionally. Many people here have a passion for sharing their culture with the world and experiencing others. The only thing in the way is the language barrier. Once you get over that, the door to the rest of the world swings wide open. There is nothing in this world that can replace genuine human connection, and language is the way to make and keep those connections. That said — who knows! Maybe in a few years there will be tech that accurately translates even the tone and nuance in real time. For now, there's huge value in learning to speak English. It's hard to imagine a truly fun night out with someone while using tech to translate everything — so I suppose it will always be valuable, no matter how far language tech progresses. Focus on the things you can control — like improving your English with ELSA Speak! Don't spend too much energy worrying about things you can't control. Try to stop negative self-talk (something I struggle with). It's ALL mental! Every new day can be the best day of your life. Stay positive and live a good life!
